Compounding services

Our compounding pharmacists create personalised medicines with patient-specific products, doses, ingredients or flavours.
That means you can avoid certain allergens, tastes or textures or maintain supply during medication shortages.

What is compounding?

Compounding is a valuable service for patients who need individualised medications.

Historically, nearly all medications were made to order for individual patients. Pharmacists were highly skilled in the art of compounding, carefully measuring, grinding and mixing medicines by hand using traditional tools and techniques.

It’s much more high-tech now but, at Buckley Street Compounding Pharmacy, we enjoy using these traditional pharmacy skills to deliver personalised care to our community.

Benefits of compounded medicines

These days, most medications are mass-produced with a ‘typical’ patient in mind. But many patients are not typical. They may be very young or very old, struggle to swallow pills, be allergic to some ingredients or just hate banana flavour!

Personalised dosages

Some patients require a dosage strength that is not commercially available.

Allergy-friendly formulations

Removing allergens like gluten, lactose or food colourings.

Alternative delivery methods

Turning pills into liquids or wafers, thick ointments into light creams, injections into capsules.

More palatable medications

Changing the taste or texture of a medication can be particularly helpful for young or neurodiverse patients.

Continued supply despite shortages

Compounding allows pharmacists to recreate discontinued or unavailable medications to avoid interruptions in treatment.

Combination medications

Sometimes, multiple medications can be combined into a single dosage form for easier administration.
